Luis Suarez signs contract extension with Liverpool
Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez has signed a "new longterm contract" with Liverpool F.C., the club announced Friday on its Web site without providing any further details.
British media said the deal would extend his current contract by two years until 2018 and make him the Reds' highestpaid player.
The 26yearold is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with 17 goals despite being suspended by the FA for Liverpool's first five games for biting Chelsea defenseman Branislav Ivanovic in April.
The Reds said only that the new deal would extend the current fiveandahalfyear contract he signed with the club in 2011. Suarez joined Liverpool that year after the club paid a 26.5millioneuro transfer fee to Amsterdambased club Ajax.
The BBC said Suarez's contract extension will keep him with Liverpool for another five years and double his pay starting next season to roughly 200,000 pounds ($325,000) a week.
"I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term," Suarez was quoted as saying on the club's Web site.
"Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt."
Suarez said his goal was to help Liverpool achieve its "ambitions of winning trophies" and continue playing "at the very highest level."
The British club is currently second in the Premier League standings with 33 points, two behind Arsenal.
Suarez has been a controversial figure since moving to the Premier League from Ajax.
He was suspended for eight games in 2011 for alleged racist insults directed at Manchester United player Patrice Evra and for 10 games earlier this year for the biting incident.
The Uruguayan international has since shown an improved attitude on the field, however, and was recently named the 2013 player of the year by the Football Supporters' Federation.
