Another member of center-left PRD party killed in Mexico
Mexico's centerleft Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, denounced the killing of a former mayor of a town in the western state of Michoacan, the third slaying of a party member in recent days.
PRD chairman Jesus Zambrano urgently called on federal and state authorities to solve the murder of Javier Sagrero Chavez, the former mayor of the town of Quiroga.
"In just one week, we've suffered the murder of three of our colleagues (two from Michoacan and one from Oaxaca), aggressions that we will not tolerate and will continue denouncing to ensure justice is done," Zambrano said Friday in a statement.
Sagrero Chavez was inside the headquarters of the Quiroga Cattlemen's Association, which he headed, when two individuals burst inside the building, according to the press in Michoacan.
One of the assailants shot the former mayor twice in the head. Paramedics tried to save his life but he died while being rushed to a hospital.
Earlier this week, Osbaldo Esquivel Lucatero, a PRD member of the legislature in Michoacan, was hacked to death with a machete Wednesday afternoon near Morelia, the state capital.
His murder came less than 24 hours after Oaxaca state legislator Everardo Hugo Hernandez Guzman, another PRD member, was killed by a lone gunman in the southern city of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan.
In a press conference on Thursday, Zambrano said the characteristics of the killings of Esquivel Lucatero and Hernandez Guzman indicated they could have been politically motivated and asked the federal Attorney General's Office to get involved in the cases.
Another PRD official, Silvano Aureoles, said at the same press conference that the party would not tolerate any attempts to divert the investigations or slander the victims.
"We don't accept, as has already begun, conclusions about the case in Michoacan to emerge and circulate that it was an attempted robbery, that (the slain PRD lawmaker) had ties to illicit activities," Aureoles said.
Esquivel Lucatero, accompanied by his brother, was being interviewed in a pickup truck by a reporter when the fatal attack occurred.
