Strong quake in Nicaragua blamed for 1 death
One person is dead as a result of the magnitude6.2 earthquake that struck northeast of this capital, Nicaraguan authorities said Friday.
A 23yearold Managua woman died of a heart attack at a capital hospital, President Daniel Ortega said at a press conference.
The quake struck at 5:27 p.m. on Thursday underneath Lake Managua and left at least 266 injured, including three in critical condition, and 822 homes damaged, according to preliminary reports.
Ortega raised the alert level from yellow to red in view of the repeated aftershocks following the temblor, which was also felt in El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica.
A red alert for earthquakes urges institutions to evacuate local residents at risk.
Managua City Hall announced the evacuation Thursday night of 155 people from neighborhoods northwest of the city where there exists a high probability of mudslides.
Nagarote, at 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Managua, was the city hit hardest, with 17 houses collapsed, 341 walls knocked down and 111 roofs destroyed, according to Deputy Mayor Mireya Urroz.
The inhabitants of Nagarote dragged their beds and mattresses into the streets or the patios of their homes in order to sleep that night.
